SUSTAINABLE SELCO SCOOPS AWARD
November 30th, 2022We were thrilled to receive the Sustainable and Environmental Initiative of the Year accolade at the Builders Merchants Awards.
Our journey to Net Zero has gathered substantial momentum over the last 12 months with a string of initiatives introduced to reduce our carbon emissions.
In our transport fleet, we have embraced alternative fuel and electric vehicles throughout the network.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, a cleaner alternative to diesel and manufactured from 100 per cent renewable and sustainable waste, has been introduced to the delivery hubs, resulting in a 95 per cent reduction in carbon emissions and the saving of 2,200 tonnes of carbon for every 100,000 miles travelled.
We now have 10 Compressed Natural Gas vehicles as part of the fleet while a dozen electrically powered counterbalance forklift trucks and an electric commercial dropside van are also being utilised.
In branches, measures have been introduced to help further reduce our carbon footprint. These have included the fitting of LEDs, saving 69 tonnes of carbon per branch per year, and the installation of the Vickers Energy Management System, guaranteeing emissions reductions of up to 40 per cent.
Additional carbon offsetting has also been achieved through two Selco Forests, with hundreds of thousands of trees planted on two sites across Scotland and Wales to offset the equivalent carbon generated by customer deliveries.
Amongst the latest developments have been the undertaking of a major installation of solar panels at a branch for the first time and a new recycling policy being rolled out across the entire branch network, including the introduction of specialist timber skips.
After receiving the award from comedian Jason Manford, Carine Jessamine, Marketing Director and Head of Sustainability at Selco, said: “We are fully committed to operating a sustainable business for colleagues and customers and this award is testament to that.
“It’s been a true team effort with everyone playing their part on the road to helping reach our ultimate goal of Net Zero operations.”
