More information about Roof Windows
What are the benefits of installing roof windows?
We stock an excellent range of modern roof windows, roof lights and skylights from some of the leading brands in the UK. They’re a fantastic way to allow natural daylight into a space through the roof. They can be used as loft windows and attic windows, or in other rooms with sloped ceilings that might not have space for a traditional vertical window, like in single-story extensions. Whether you’re after windows for flat roofs or skylights for pitched roofs, we’re sure we’ve got something for every project at Selco.
As well as providing light to brighten up the space and reduce the need to have home lights on in the daytime, skylight windows will also help with better ventilation. All our roof lights and skylights are designed to be open, allowing fresh air to circulate in the room and help regulate the temperature, humidity, and airflow. Roof light windows can also help with the insulation and energy efficiency of your customer’s home when paired with proper double-glazing and ventilation, helping to keep the room warm in colder winter months and cool during the summer.
Besides providing many functional benefits, our selection of skylight roof windows can be used to add an attractive architectural touch to a room and help to break up the space. Whether you’re looking for bathroom or kitchen skylight to bathe the rooms in natural daylight, or you’re after double-glazed roof windows to aid insulation, we’re sure you’ll find what you need for the job at hand.

FAQs
Do I need planning permission for a skylight?
Most roof windows and skylights won’t require planning permission. There are certain permitted development rules you’ll need to abide by, such as the window not protruding more than 15cm above the roof’s plane. Make sure to read local building regulations before installing any roof windows.
How much is it to install a skylight?
The cost of installing roof windows and skylights depends on your customer’s budget, requirements and preferences, but in general it can vary from anywhere between £500-£2500.
How do I clean a roof window from the inside?
To clean a skylight, you can purchase a specialist window cleaner or use regular washing up liquid or warm, soapy water. Clean the window using a squeegee or sponge and wipe clean with a cloth. Many modern roof windows have a sash that can be rotated 180° to allow you to clean the outside glass of the window.
What is a U-value and how important is it for roof windows?
Thermal transmittance, known as U-value, is the rate of transfer of heat through matter, divided by the difference in temperature across the structure. Essentially, a U-value measures how effective a material is as an insulator. A roof window’s U-value is important, because low U-values mean lower energy efficiency and higher energy bills.
What size roof window do I need?
In general, you’ll want your skylight to be no less than 20% of the room’s total floor area. The size of your roof window will depend on the shape and size of the room – for example, you might want a bigger roof window in a smaller room to allow in more light and make the room feel more spacious.
