What are the benefits of using fence post cement?
Post cement, or post concrete, is used to secure fence posts into the ground in places where extra strength and stability is wanted for the fencing. First, dig the right-sized hole for your fence post (usually 3x the width of the post) using a post hole digger or shovel, and lay some gravel at the bottom to help with drainage. Place the fence in the centre, and pour your fence post cement around post evenly, filling the hole. Make sure your fence post is straight and level and leave the concrete to set for the appropriate time.
To remove a fence post that’s cemented into the ground, first dig a semi-circle around one side of the fence posts concrete base, creating a gap between the concrete and the soil. You can break up the concrete with a bar or breaker, or simply wiggle the fence post back and forth to break the concrete away from the soil and lift it out.
Fence posts do need to be secured into the ground to prevent the posts from lifting or leaning and therefore keeping the fence’s overall structure stable and intact. Cement is the strongest and most durable option to secure your fence posts, but you could backfill the hole with gravel or expanding foam instead.
The drying time of fence post cement varies a lot depending on the product used and can take up to anything between a few minutes to a few hours to fully cure. Most fence posts can require anything from 1-10 bags of concrete. The amount you’ll need for your fence post will entirely depend on the size of the fence post and the size of the hole it’s going in.
