How to apply K Rend render

K Rend renders are applied to the exterior of buildings by hand or machine, depending on the size of the project. The substrate needs to be clean, dry and primed before applying the render. Different finishes and textures can be easily achieved by varying the application method.

Once complete, this low maintenance render needs little upkeep. A light cleaning will be required from time to time, dependent on weathering, spores in the atmosphere and smog in urban areas.

Through coloured render holds the colour pigment within the render, so it doesn’t need to be painted. This means lower costs and less hassle to maintain as it won’t need repainting in the future. Overtime, it will just need a gentle wash down to freshen the appearance.

At Selco, we understand that not every project is the same, which is why we offer an extensive range of over 20 different K Rend colours to choose from. Pick your colour, select your chosen render product from either K Rend’s Silicone Thin Coat and Silicone Scraped Texture render ranges and order in branch at your local Selco. If you’re unsure on which K Rend colour to order, K Rend offer free samples and a K Rend colour simulator to help you choose the right colour and texture for your rendering project. If you’re looking for further design inspiration, K Rend case studies offer a great way to visualise this stunning range of silicone render colours.

Thin coat render is designed to go onto cement or insulation boards. It is thinner with a flexibility which allows for movement in these substrates. Scraped texture render is much thicker and is designed to be used on brick or blockwork substrates.

Mix your basecoat with 5 to 6 litres of water per 25kg. K Rend HP12 and HPX base coats should be applied at 3mm thickness per pass.

When applying your base coat, it’s important to take special care to straighten with a darby / straight edge to ensure that the next coat is applied to uniform level. Form a light key horizontally and allow 24 hours curing time before further application.

For more information about applying K Rend base coats, visit the K Rend website.

For a one coat finish, K Rend K1 Spray or LW1 lightweight render is applied directly onto block work and must be finished to a minimum of 16mm in thickness to avoid ‘ghosting’. This render should be applied in two passes; the first pass 6-8mm thick and the second pass 12-14mm. After setting, 2mm is scraped off for a 16mm finish.

If applying the render in a two coat application, the finish coat is applied over a K Rend base coat to line level using a darby or straight edge, to a minimum thickness of 10-12mm. When straightening, hollows should be filled out immediately before a skin is formed. Take special care to avoid small hollows, as this can make it difficult to achieve a good finish.

More application information for K1 Spray and LW1 Lightweight render can be found on the K Rend website.

To apply K Rend Silicone TC render, the surface must first be prepared with a first coat of K Rend Base Coat and a second coat of K Rend Primer TC.

Before applying the base coat render, the surface should be clean, level, dry and free from efflorescence. The base coat will need a minimum of 14 days to dry before any further work commences.

K Rend Primer TC can be applied by brush, roller or spray and requires 24 hours drying time before adding topcoat.

K Rend Silicone TC topcoat should be applied to the thickness of the largest grain size using a stainless steel float. The surface is then rubbed up in a circular motion using a plastic float to create the texture. The freshly applied render must be protected from rain and from drying too fast.
