Selco donates £1000 worth of building materials to Sheldon Community Centre

A community centre in Birmingham has a new outdoor garden and wildlife area for local residents to enjoy in 2019 – thanks to assistance from a leading builders merchant.

Sheldon Community Centre, based on Sheldon Heath Road and home to the F.I.T.C.A.P Nursery and After School clubs as well as other regular groups, has undergone a revamp.

The Tyseley branch of Selco Builders Warehouse donated almost £1,000 worth of building materials towards the work.

The project was overseen by youngsters aged between 16 and 25, who are part of the Prince’s Trust charity team. They were supported by officers from Acocks Green Police Station.

The outdoor garden includes a children’s allotment while two bug houses and a seating area made from tree stumps feature in the wildlife area.

In addition to the outdoor work, the dining room inside the centre has been re-decorated with a sea-themed wall mural.

PCSO Stephen McGrath, who led the team along with PCSO Liz Curnew, said: “This is a real community project which will provide new attractions for an important facility and was carried out by an enthusiastic group of youngsters, supported by West Midlands Police.

“We are proud to be involved and delighted Selco Tyseley threw its support behind the project.

“The F.I.T.C.A.P Nursery and After School Club – as well as other groups that use the centre – will benefit hugely from the new areas.”

Amongst the materials donated by Selco Tyseley – which is based on Wharfdale Road - are sleepers, plastic pipes, brackets and woodchip.

David Wiseman, branch manager of Selco Tyseley, said: “This is an important project for the people of Sheldon and we are delighted to have played a part in helping it become a reality.

“Supporting the communities in which we operate is a big part of the Selco ethos and this is the type of worthwhile project which will make a real difference to local residents in the area.”
