SELCO: COMPANY HISTORY



Selco was originally formed as Sewell & Co (Timber) Ltd in 1895. From a small, family owned business in Birmingham, the company has now become a fast growing, highly competitive, and highly respected trade only builders' merchant with branches spanning four regions in England and Wales, and plans for further growth.

The original business developed from a modest timber mill to become, by 1938, a builders' merchant . In 1982 it changed its name to Selco .
Selco had three operational warehouses in the Birmingham area by 1986, which saw a management buy-out by John Taylor. In 1990 the business was purchased British Dredging PLC, and Selco expanded from the Midlands into the South West with the opening of three new branches in Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol.

In 1998 the company was acquired by Grafton Group Plc , pushing further growth. The expansion of Selco into London and the North West makes it now the UK's fastest growing builders' warehouse.
