BRUMMIES OFF TO A FLYING START

April 30th, 2013

IMG_9881[1]The Selco Birmingham Brummies have made a blistering start to their attempts to at least emulate last season’s charge to speedway’s Elite League play-offs.

Three victories from the first four meetings have left the Brummies handily placed in fourth in the table, despite having ridden fewer meetings than the three teams above them.

After challenge match victories over Belle Vue and Sheffield to start the campaign, the Brummies were up and running in the league with a 49-41 triumph on the road at near neighbours Coventry.

Martin Smolinski offered an indication of his early-season excellence with a 19-point haul, and the German again produced an eye-catching display as the Brummies completed a Midlands double over the Bees with a comprehensive 55-37 triumph at Perry Barr.

Despite a determined showing, the Brummies suffered their first defeat of the season when they were edged out 47-43 at home to champions Swindon, with Jason Doyle, Chris Harris and Smolinski the top scorers for the hosts in a hard-fought meeting.

Weather provided a frustrating and unscheduled interlude as the back-to-back trips to Lakeside and Eastbourne both fell by the wayside.

That left the Selco Brummies with a 14-day gap between meetings, but there were no signs of rustiness as they registered another emphatic home triumph over Lakeside Hammers.

Doyle led the way with a return of 14 points, with captain Danny King also in impressive form on a night when he scored 12.

The Brummies are back in Elite League action on Wednesday, May 8 when Eastbourne are the visitors to Perry Barr.

Brummies press and practice session review

March 19th, 2013

The Selco Birmingham Brummies took to the track once more in anticipation of the start of the Elite League season against Coventry on March 20th.

The official press and practice session saw the Brummies dust down their bikes and hit the track in front of home crowds at Perry Bar Stadium.

Through wind, rain and snow the Brummies took to the track to test their bikes and make sure they were ready for next week’s meet and the 2013 season.

Local press and fans were in attendance to see the riders, their bikes and the brand spanking new race suits.

So fingers crossed they will be able to replicate last season’s results and finish top in the Sky Sports.

SELCO MOTOR IN TO BRUMMIES SPEEDWAY PARTNERSHIP

January 25th, 2013

Selco Builders Warehouse has further cemented its strong sporting links after being announced as Birmingham Speedway’s ‘Team Title’ sponsors for 2013.

Selco took its first venture into speedway 12 months ago and were thrilled with the sustained national exposure provided by its sponsorship of the Brummies.

And that ensured there was no hesitation when the opportunity arose to extend the agreement with the team, which finished third in last season’s Elite League.

Last season’s sponsorship brought around 50 hours of Sky Sports television coverage, as well as sustained local, regional and national brand awareness across multiple media platforms.

The sponsorship also proves an ideal geographical fit for Selco, which was formed in Birmingham and retains a strong presence in the City.

Simon Humpage, marketing manager for Selco Builders Warehouse, said: “The success of the 2012 season made the decision to continue our sponsorship a very easy one.

“Last year was our first season in speedway and it exceeded all our expectations. The sport is a great vehicle to increase our brand awareness.

“We’ve had excellent feedback from the fans and we are looking forward to an exciting and successful season ahead.

“There is a great supporter base around the Brummies and it’s extremely pleasing for us that a lot of the team’s followers are also loyal Selco customers.”

Brummies co-owner Alan Phillips was delighted to see the link with Selco extended.

“It’s great to have Selco back on board after they offered tremendous support last year,” he said. “It’s a very comfortable partnership and long may it continue.”

The extension to the sponsorship agreement was announced at the Perry Barr branch of Selco Builders Warehouse, just around the corner from the Brummies home track.

Riders Ben Barker and Josh Auty were also confirmed as signings for 2013.

Selco, who also sponsor the London Broncos rugby league team, are a fast growing, competitive and highly respected trade only builders merchants with branches throughout England and Wales.

Further branch openings are planned throughout 2013, starting with Old Kent Road in London.

Best Ever Season For the Selco Brummies

The Selco Birmingham Brummies 2012 record breaking season ended in slight anti-climax after they were knocked out of the Elite League Knockout Cup semi-final despite a hard-fought 45-45 draw home leg against  Coventry’s Buildbase Bees at Perry Barr.

Needing to overturn a six-point deficit after the first away leg at Brandon, 5-1s in Heats 2 and 5 for the visitors instantly put the Selco Brummies on the back-foot.  The Brummies kept their hopes alive with a maximum of their own courtesy of Ben Barker and Sebastian Ulamek in Heat 9, but they could not quite do enough despite levelling things up late on and went down to a 96-90 aggregate defeat.

Skipper Danny King led the side sensationally to bag 14 points and Ben Barker also performed well from the No.3 race jacket, but in the end, ten last places cost the home side dearly, and they finish the campaign wondering what could have been having been knocked out of both the Elite League Play-Offs and the Knockout Cup at the semi-final stage.

King said: “It’s a shame. The boys were so close but it’s not quite enough.  We’ve just got to be happy and reflect on what we’ve done this year. I think we’d take it, it’s been a good season for the club.”

The Brummies had an excellent season finishing in 3rd place in the SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE which gave them a place in the end of season title shootout in only their second season in the Elite League.  That in itself was a great achievement but theBirmingham club then also went on a cup run getting through to the semi-finals of the Elite League Knockout Cup.

“reaching the play-offs is a historic achievement for this club and we are so proud of the team” says club co-owner Alan Phillips.  Co-owner Grahm Dury added “It wasn’t that long ago that there was no speedway inBirmingham. It’s a fairytale story in my opinion.”

NELSON IN FOR ELITE LEAGUE BATTLE

January 5th, 2012

BIRMINGHAM Speedway are delighted to confirm the signing of highly rated Australian youngster Tyson Nelson.

Nelson will share the double-up spot at reserve with Josh Auty and will also ride for Premier League Rye House.

Selco Brummies boss Graham Drury said: “Tyson is a highly rated rider with a good style. We are in talks with Rye House owner Len Silver and if he does well enough for us we would consider making him a club asset.

“We are very aware of the fact that our Elite League asset base is not as strong as it should be so Tyson is the type of rider who can fit the bill.

“He will share the team spot with Josh and then we will see how they go. We will allocate meetings as we see fit.”

BRUMMIES LAND ULAMEK

January 5th, 2012

BIRMINGHAM Speedway have signed Polish international star Sebastian Ulamek for the 2012 season.

Ulamek, who has 30 Grand Prix appearances under his belt, has been tempted back to British racing by the Selco Brummies after spending the last few seasons in his home country and Sweden.

He will form an impressive spearhead at Perry Barr alongside Bjarne Pedersen, Danny King and Ben Barker.
Ulamek will meet Selco Brummies fans at Perry Barr tonight when he appears at a function which is open to the general public in the main stand at 8pm. Another new signing will also be announced.

The event also gives supporters the chance to buy season tickets at a reduced rate as well as securing reservations for seating in the grandstand for the full season.

Other members of the Selco Brummies are also expected to be on hand to meet supporters and it represents a good opportunity for autographs and photographs with the team.

Birmingham boss Graham Drury said: “He’s won the title with Coventry and with all due respect the last time he raced here regularly the league was that little bit stronger than it is now and that’s why I believe he can improve on his average.

“In many ways he is the forgotten man of the sport but he has ambitions to go all the way and reach the top once again and he feels keeping busy by riding in the UK can help him towards that goal.

“He’s beaten the best riders in the world throughout his career and if he can settle in quickly and start scoring big points for us from the start then he will become one of the top performers in the Elite League.”
